What we collect, and what we don’t

Reading

Anyone can read every page without an account. We don’t use advertising or tracking cookies, and we don’t sell or share information about readers with anyone.

Your account

You open an account by signing in with Google, Microsoft or Facebook. That provider tells us your name, your email address and an account number it uses for you on this site. We never see your password, your contacts or your posts, and we never post anything for you. We keep the name and email to show you which account you’re signed into, and the account number to recognize you when you sign back in. If you save a ZIP code, we keep it to show your township and county. If you choose to save your home, we keep its address and county parcel number, as the county’s public property records write them, to show your home’s taxes each time you visit; Remove, beside it on your area page, erases it. Addresses you look up without saving go to the county’s records and aren’t kept.

Verifying your identity

To vote you verify your identity once. Stripe runs the check: you photograph a government-issued ID and take a live selfie on Stripe’s page. From the result we keep your state, ZIP code, birth year and the type of document, plus a one-way, keyed fingerprint of your name and date of birth that lets us refuse a second registration but can’t be turned back into either. We keep no name, document number, photo or document image from the check, and as soon as it finishes we instruct Stripe to delete the photos and details it collected.

Your votes

We keep each vote you cast so you can change it and see it on your ballot page. Results are published only as totals; no one else can see how you voted.

Cookies

We set only the cookies the site needs: one that keeps you signed in, and short-lived ones while a sign-in or an ID check is in progress.

Deleting your data

Sign in, open your account page and choose Delete my account. That erases your account, any saved home, your voter registration and every vote you cast, and takes your votes out of the results, at once. If you signed in with Facebook, you can also remove this site under Facebook’s Settings › Apps and Websites; that stops Facebook sharing anything further with us.
